DescriptionWhen your hardware project requires controlling main AC power or high-current DC loads, an electromechanical relay is the most reliable tool for the job. The 5V DC Relay provides complete galvanic isolation. This means there is no physical electrical connection between your delicate 5V microcontroller and the dangerous 250V mains power, ensuring that a high-voltage spike on the load side cannot travel backward and destroy your logic board.Understanding the 5-Pin SPDT ConfigurationThis is a Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) relay, meaning it features 5 pins on the bottom:Coil Pins (2 Pins): Applying 5V across these two pins energizes an internal electromagnet, which physically pulls the switch contact over.Common (COM): The main power input for the heavy load you are trying to switch.Normally Open (NO): This pin is disconnected from COM when the relay is off. When you send a 5V signal to the coil, the internal switch connects COM to NO, turning your appliance ON.Normally Closed (NC): This pin is connected to COM by default. Energizing the coil breaks this connection, turning the appliance OFF.Crucial Circuit Design NoteWhile this is a “5V” relay, you cannot drive the coil directly from a microcontroller GPIO pin. The internal electromagnetic coil draws roughly 70mA of current, which will quickly burn out the logic pins on an Arduino or ESP32 (which max out around 20mA to 40mA). To use this bare component safely, you must design a small driver circuit using an NPN switching transistor (like a 2N2222) to handle the coil current, along with a flyback diode placed across the coil pins to protect against reverse voltage spikes.Key Features:High Switching Capacity: Safely handles up to 10 Amps, allowing it to control major household appliances.Audible Feedback: Produces a satisfying mechanical “click” when switching, making troubleshooting your code incredibly easy.Standard Footprint: Features a universal pin spacing that drops perfectly into standard perfboards and custom PCBs.Technical Specifications:Coil Operating Voltage: 5V DCNominal Coil Current: ~71.4 mAMax Switching Voltage: 250V AC / 30V DCMax Switching Current: 10AContact Configuration: 1 Form C (SPDT)Electrical Life: 100,000 Operations (at rated load)Mechanical Life: 10,000,000 OperationsIdeal Applications:Designing custom smart home relays and Wi-Fi enabled wall outletsBuilding standalone industrial control panels and timer boardsRepairing standard 1-channel, 2-channel, or 4-channel maker relay shieldsSwitching heavy 12V/24V DC motors and water pumps
